Theresa & Loz

We, that’s Theresa (36 from Germany) and Loz (43 from England), rarely listen to podcasts but on a seemingly endless drive to one of the distant crags from our home in Portugal we found ourselves engrossed, for 2.5 hours, by Matt speaking on the Nugget Climbing podcast.

Months later, after we had moved to Spain to take our climbing to the next level, Loz came to the realization that he needed help to deal with the several injuries he had accumulated over 43 years of living and 5 years of climbing. We contacted Matt and Loz soon started having regular online sessions. Theresa watched Loz’s rehab and training habits transform and his faith in his body return - Loz and Matt made a great team!

Very soon it became clear that Theresa, too, needed a Matt in her life. It took a silly foot slip to get her to book her first appointment but then she was hooked. Matt has helped Theresa to rehab her first impactful climbing injury, progressing from rehab to a comprehensive training plan for her short term goals (onsighting 6c again) and long-term goals (8a).

When I started working with Matt my expectations were low–I have an old spinal cord injury and two right shoulder rotator cuff tears, and have worked with a multitude of PTs, orthopedics, and personal trainers over the years with little improvement. Usually, before seeing a new physical therapist, I would be able to guess the exercises they would assign me, as I had been prescribed the same regiments repeatedly over the years. Matt was the first person to approach my imbalances in a new way, and working with him has improved both my climbing and day-to-day quality of life.

I’ve had my best climbing season to date!

Working with Matt has been incredible — night and day compared to working with other physical therapists in a traditional setting. First of all, he's just way more knowledgeable than any other PT I've ever met. Second, the feeling I've gotten with typical PT's is that they can't do more than get you in, throw some textbook solution at you, and get you out in the allotted 30 minutes. Matt's practice is set up so he has the time to dive deep into your history. This is part of what helps him figure out the solution to complex problems so quickly and it makes me, as the patient, feel heard and allows me to trust the program.

Working with Matt to rehab an MCL sprain while preparing for an international trip was an absolute game-changer. He thoughtfully crafted a rehab and training plan designed to strengthen my knee and work on my climbing weaknesses all while living on the road with unconventional access to typical fitness facilities. Just over 3 months post-injury I was back to climbing 5.13b in Rifle and feeling more than prepared for my month-long trip to Europe. His personalized approach and commitment to my unique circumstances truly made all the difference in my recovery journey.
